Angela Tonali spoke at the HOMI Fashion&Jewels Exhibition about her experience and concept of innovative design, both as a jewellery designer and as a Fine Jewellery teacher at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan.
A Short Presentation
Angela Tonali, a jewellery designer, based in Milan and Piacenza, founded her eponymous design studio in 1995. She designs fashion jewellery and high jewellery in cooperation with designers, national and international luxury companies. She also participates in various exhibitions and design competitions. he completed her career by becoming a lecturer in Fine Jewellery at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan.
Her design is diverse: soft and simple forms alternate with more decisive and modern ones. Jewellery must become an object that is present but not invasive, something capable of underlining charm and elegance, communicating passion and personality, and defining a mood. A piece of jewellery should enhance and blend with the style of its owner.
Creativity: what does it represent and where does inspiration come from?
Creativity, is simply breaking existing rules to create innovative and functional ones, opening the mind and going beyond standards. It is INTUITION, GENIUS and STUDY.
Inspiration comes from an emotion that can arouse a detail, an image, a phrase that can provoke an explosion of ideas in a flash. It involves looking at everything around us with different eyes and a lot of stylistic research.
Turning more specifically to contemporary and researched jewellery, what are the most commonly used materials and why?
In terms of respecting human rights and caring for the environment, one can mention ethical diamonds and sustainable gold. At this particular time, the focus has certainly shifted towards quality and craftsmanship. Specifically, it is better to have one valuable and durable product than a cheap disposable one.
When choosing the material, how much attention is given to the recycling aspect?
In this particular period, even jewellery makers are focusing on sustainability (hopefully not just as a fad of the moment) and finding new solutions to the most pressing issues of our time, such as the climate, responsible sourcing of resources and materials. Recycling is a topic that’s cropping up more and more in fashion and lots of designers have decided to join the cause, changing their old ways to reduce waste and have a more positive impact”.
How important is the analysis of “Shapes” and “Lines”?
It is fundamental, it is the basis of jewellery design, to create a balance between creativity and the functionality of the jewel.
Which are your favourite artists or which are the most popular artists/designers internationally?
I admire the work of the designer Elena Salmistraro and the photographer Giovanni Gastel, unfortunately recently deceased.
Italian design always remains my inspiration.
